In the bustling city of New Bedford, a disturbance reported on David St. and Salisbury St. led to the apprehension of 27-year-old MARCELL GONCALVES. Officers were initially notified of an individual brandishing a firearm in the area. Officers were initially notified of an individual brandishing a firearm in the area. Upon arrival, Officer James Sullivan witnessed GONCALVES reaching into his crossbody bag. As Officer Sullivan approached GONCALVES to confront him, he discarded the bag on the ground and attempted to flee. Despite his resistance, GONCALVES was apprehended with the assistance of a concerned Good Samaritan. A subsequent search revealed GONCALVES to be in possession of a pair of brass knuckles and a knife. The discarded bag contained a P80 Polymer “Ghost gun” with no serial number, loaded with 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition. GONCALVES was arrested and charged with grave offenses, including carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm without a license, assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of a firearm without a serial number. His prior convictions include possession of a firearm in 2018 and a pending case for possession of a large-capacity feeding device from April of this year. GONCALVES’s extensive criminal history, with 19 adult charges and 13 dismissals, resulted in his current detention without bail at the Dartmouth House of Correction. “NEW BEDFORD – Police have arrested a man on suspicion of weapons possession after a disturbance in the city’s south end.
On Sunday, July 7th, officers responded to the area of David St. and Salisbury St. for a man who had recently brandished a firearm. Upon arrival, Officer James Sullivan located the man, who he observed reaching into a crossbody bag he was carrying. When Officer Sullivan attempted to confront him, he quickly threw the bag to the ground.
Ofc. Sullivan then attempted to grab the man, but he suddenly pushed away and attempted to flee. Although he resisted, he was eventually apprehended and restrained with the assistance of a Good Samaritan. The suspect was subsequently identified as Mr. MARCELL GONCALVES, 27, of 25 Dudley St.
When officers arrived to assist, GONCALVES was found to be carrying a pair of brass knuckles and a knife. The bag GONCALVES had discarded was found to contain a P80 Polymer “Ghost gun” with no serial number. The weapon was loaded with 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
GONCALVES was arrested and charged with numerous serious offenses, including carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm without a license, assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of a firearm without a serial number. GONCALVES has a prior conviction for possession of a firearm, stemming from a case in 2018. He also has a pending case for possession of a large-capacity feeding device, stemming from an incident in April of this year.
GONCALVES has 19 adult charges to his name, 13 of which resulted in dismissals in court. He is currently being held without bail at the Dartmouth House of Correction.
