INDIANAPOLIS — Anyone who went outside Sunday afternoon likely got a free shower and foggy windshields.

The National Weather Service issued a warning for severe thunderstorms in central Indiana Sunday morning. The storms reached the area around 1:30 p.m., bringing lightning and heavy rain that sent those enjoying a previously sunny day running for cover.

As of 2:30 p.m. Sunday, meteorologist Joseph Nield said Sunday’s thunderstorms are expected to taper off by 4:30 p.m. as the storms move south of the metro area. However, there is a chance for another round of severe storms around 2 a.m. Monday.

According to a social media post, dangers from the series of storms include lightning, heavy rain, localized flooding and devastating wind gusts.

“There will be some potential for additional strong and severe storms late tonight,” Nield said. “Also concerns for heavy rainfall and localised flooding there as it is still so warm and humid here.”

Indianapolis can expect heat and humidity early in the week

Nield said Indianapolis can expect warm and humid temperatures for the coming week. There is a chance of thunderstorms early Monday, which could cool things down, but it’s hard to tell yet.

A cold front from Canada will move into central Indiana on Tuesday, expected to keep temperatures somewhat cooler.

“Monday night and then again Tuesday and Tuesday night we have potential for additional thunderstorm activity,” Nield said. “But as we go further and further out in time, that uncertainty, which is already relatively high, continues to grow.”

Nield said the line of strong storms moving southeast across central Indiana is due to a very hot and humid air mass concentrating over the western United States. He said the weather is typical for mid-July.

Nield predicts the weather will improve next weekend.

“If people hang in there for a few more days, the second half of the week into the weekend is looking pretty good, especially for this time of year,” Nield said.

As Hoosiers weather the storms, Nield advises keeping a close eye on the weather and staying indoors if possible.

“I just want to be in a sturdy building and away from windows,” Nield said. “There’s really no safe place outside when there’s a thunderstorm. If you’re close enough to hear thunder, you’re close enough to get struck by lightning, even if it’s not raining.”
