Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary told PTI, “The PCR call about the incident in ward no. 24 was received at the GTB Enclave police station. On reaching the spot, the police found a patient namely Riyazuddin injured. He was later declared dead by doctors.”

The officer said an 18-year-old man entered the department around 4 p.m. and shot Riyazuddin.

The victim’s wife claimed that the gunman wanted to kill someone else but accidentally shot Riyazuddin.

She told ANI, “I met my husband yesterday. When I reached here, I heard that he was shot dead. They (the accused) had come here to kill someone else but accidentally shot my husband dead. There was someone admitted in another ward, his wife used to tell me that her husband was in danger and people might come and kill him. The gunmen had come to kill him but they shot my husband dead.”

Riyazuddin’s cousin Shoaib told PTI that the hospital knew an attack was coming but failed to take adequate security measures.

He said: “The nurse told us that a young man had shot our brother while his bandages were being changed. In the room next door, another patient had been attacked the day before. His wife had called for security when they found out there was going to be a second attack, but there was none. So they had come to kill someone else, but my brother lost his life because of confusion. My brother was innocent, he had no criminal record and was mentally disturbed.”

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said, “Negligence in such cases will not be tolerated. Whoever is guilty will not be spared. The safety of all hospitals will be reviewed.”

A hospital employee reported that several people pushed the doctor into the ward, shot the patient and then escaped.

The GTB Hospital issued an official statement saying, “No one else was injured. SHO of GTB Enclave, ACP and Crime Branch officers reached the scene after being informed by the CMO on duty.”

A nurse, who was on duty and requested anonymity, said the teenager entered the ward at 3.59pm and asked everyone to remain calm and quiet. The nurse said the sound of gunfire attracted a crowd outside the ward and someone from the crowd alerted the police. She told PTI, “He took out a pistol hidden behind him, shot the patient and ran away. It was scary for everyone present in the ward.”
