The Knicks legend sacrificed a whopping $113 million to sign a four-year, $156.5 million extension, ensuring the Knicks remain competitive. This move not only endeared him to Knicks fans but also showcased his unwavering commitment to the team’s success. By taking a financial hit, Brunson created cap space for the Knicks to improve their roster. In contrast, LeBron James’s recent pay cut appears relatively modest, leading to speculation that winning a championship may no longer be his top priority. However, Brunson’s sacrifice has set a new bar, demonstrating his unwavering determination to bring the Knicks a title. The Villanova Boys, reunited with Mikal Bridges this summer, may now follow in Brunson’s footsteps. Bridges is expected to take a pay cut in his next extension, ensuring the Nova Boys remain together for years to come. Brunson’s sacrifice has reignited hope for Knicks fans and could mark the beginning of a new era for the team. His unselfish act has created a precedent where players are willing to put the team’s success above their individual financial gain.

Just two years into his tenure in New York, Jalen Brunson has become a Knicks legend. Taking them from the laughingstock of the league to legitimate title contenders, JB is easily one of the best free agent signings in recent memory. While his on-court performance continues to impress, Brunson won the hearts of Knicks fans once again when he made a whopping $113 million sacrifice yesterday by signing a four-year, $156.5 million extension. But his heroic gesture, unlike that of LeBron James, serves a greater purpose as it could bring the Knicks one step closer to the ultimate goal.

Yes, while Brunson’s new deal certainly isn’t a small salary, it’s a bit of a disappointment when you realize that he could have signed a five-year, $269 million contract if he had waited another year to sign the extension. So why did J.B. give up all that money? Well, to give the Knicks more flexibility to keep the roster intact and make moves toward building a championship-winning team. While J.B. will lose $37.1 million guaranteed over the first three years of his contract due to his sacrifice, that money can now be used by the Knicks in cap space to improve the roster.

And that’s something fans were hoping even LeBron James would do to get the Lakers back in contention for a title. When the Lakers were pursuing Klay Thompson and DeMar DeRozan in free agency, there were reports that LBJ was willing to take a hefty pay cut on his new extension to spare his team from the penalties of going over the second luxury tax bracket and give them enough cap space to sign a big-name star. However, with Klay choosing Dallas over LA, LeBron ultimately sacrificed just $3 million of his originally projected $104 million deal and signed a two-year, $101.3 million extension. And he did spare the Lakers from going over the second bracket. But because Brunson’s sacrifice is significantly greater than LeBron’s, the Knicks have a much better chance of building a championship-winning roster.

Will Mikal Bridges follow in Jalen Brunson’s footsteps?

When LeBron only took a $3 million pay cut, speculation began that winning a title was no longer a priority for the 39YO. However, with Brunson’s sacrifice, he has made his intentions pretty clear, as the franchise can now focus on ending their 51-year championship drought. Additionally, the Villanova Boys are finally reunited with Mikal Bridges who joined the team this summer, as Hart, Brunson, DiVincenzo and Bridges are teammates again, years after winning multiple national titles in college. Perhaps winning a title with his best friends was more important to Brunson than the money he could have made.

And his sacrifice could set a precedent for the entire team, as Mikal will now follow in JB’s footsteps and take a pay cut in his next extension. According to Evan Sidery of Forbes Sports, Bridges could also forfeit a large chunk of his money, as he enters the third year of his $90 million contract this year and will soon be eligible for an extension. If he does, the Nova Boys could remain teammates for years to come, as the Knicks have enough money to keep them all playing, and then some to surround them with talented players who can help bring a title to New York. Brunson’s sacrifice, then, could mark the beginning of a new era for the Knicks.
