Mumbai, July 13 (PTI) With the rise of the gig economy, tier-1 cities led the way in the number of vacancies for short-term workers, accounting for 67.1 per cent of vacancies from June 2023 to June 2024, a report said on Saturday.

A report by WorkIndia, a recruitment platform for tech-savvy workers, reveals that 63.11 percent of applications come from these tier-1 cities, where there are ample opportunities for handymen.

Cities in the second category received 26 percent of vacancies and 25 percent of applications, indicating balanced growth potential, the report said.

However, cities in the third category saw a lower percentage of vacancies (6.7 percent) compared to 11 percent of applications, indicating increased competition amid an oversupply of gig workers, the report said.

The WorkIndia report, an annual index that reflects the situation of workers in the Indian labour market and recruitment activity, is based on job postings on the platform during the period June 2023 to June 2024.

The survey further found that Delhi emerged as the top hub for gig workers, with 17.7 percent of job openings and 22.9 percent of job applications, reflecting strong demand across sectors.

Mumbai followed with 16.57 percent of job openings and 15.8 percent of applications. Bengaluru and Pune showed promise as emerging gig economies, where focused efforts are needed to attract more employers and employees.

Back-office roles dominated the handyman job market, accounting for 34.5 percent of vacancies, followed by delivery drivers (19.3 percent) and cooks (16.3 percent).

The increase in online marketing roles (5.27 percent) indicates a growing demand for digital skills within the gig worker sector, the report said.

The majority of gig workers (60.56 percent) are between the ages of 18 and 29, while workers between the ages of 30 and 49 make up 20.97 percent of the workforce, the report said.

Sector-wise, back-office, delivery and culinary roles are in greatest demand, while digital marketing roles are growing in popularity.
