New Delhi, July 13 (PTI) The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has postponed demolition work in the Yamnua plain near the Majnu Ka Tila gurdwara, sources said on Saturday.

According to a senior police official, a demolition operation was carried out at Khyber Pass, near Civil Lines, on Saturday to clear the nuisance.

According to police, several temporary structures that were illegally erected on the premises of the Land and Development Office have been demolished.

Dharamveer Solanki, a Pakistani refugee living in Majnu Ka Tila area, said the demolition crew had not yet reached his area.

“The DDA is yet to reach Majnu ka Tila. They have started the demolition near the Vidhan Sabha area,” Solanki said.

The DDA announced in a public notice on Thursday that a demolition campaign will take place in the area on July 13 and 14.

People in Majnu Ka Tila, which has a significant population of Pakistani Hindus, said they received a notice from the land authority late on Thursday night asking them to vacate the area by Friday.

The notice referred to the April 3 judgment of the National Green Tribunal and the March 12 judgment of the Delhi High Court as the basis for the move.

“In order to comply with the order, it is proposed to organise a demolition drive on Saturday and Sunday against the encroachment on the flood plain of river Yamuna, south of Gurudwara Majnu Ka Tila (West Bank),” the DDA notification reads.

The affected families can find temporary shelter in shelters run by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), it said.

“Therefore, the residents of the area are hereby requested to vacate the area by July 12, otherwise they will be responsible for any losses incurred as a result of the demolition action against the encroachment on July 13 or later,” the notice said.

In its April 3 order, the NGT said the status report submitted by the DDA did not mention any substantial effective steps taken by the agency to remove the encroachment on the area.

The NGT has requested the agency to submit a compliance report by email no later than one week before the next hearing, July 15.

Before the Lok Sabha elections, some refugees living in Majnu Ka Tila were granted citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Amendment Act.
