Discrimination Lawsuit Filed Against Detroit Hotel Over Alleged Job Interview DiscrepancyDiscrimination Lawsuit Filed Against Detroit Hotel Over Alleged Job Interview Discrepancy A black man in Detroit has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Shinola Hotel after he allegedly received different treatment during a job application process based on his name. Dwight Jackson applied for a hospitality position at the hotel earlier this year but did not receive a callback. Subsequently, he modified his resume, changing his name to a “white-sounding” alias, John Jebrowski, and began receiving multiple interview requests within days. Attorney Johannes Marko, representing Jackson, stated that after revealing his true identity during an interview, Jackson was dismissed. “Mr. Jackson confronted them and said, ‘I’m Dwight Jackson, I’m the guy applying for a job,’ and they said, ‘We’re done. We don’t want to hire you,'” Marko explained. In response to the allegations, the Shinola Hotel issued a statement stressing its commitment to inclusivity and non-discrimination. “We take this allegation very seriously and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind,” the hotel declared. Since filing the lawsuit, Marko has claimed to have received additional reports of alleged discrimination at the hotel. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about racial bias in the hiring process and the importance of fostering diverse and equitable workplaces.

A black man has filed a discrimination lawsuit against a Detroit hotel after he allegedly received a job interview after altering his resume.

Dwight Jackson applied for a job in hospitality at the Shinola Hotel in downtown Detroit earlier this year, but initially didn’t get a call back. Jackson decided to modify his resume by simply changing his name to a “white-sounding” name to see if he would get different results.

“Nothing substantively changed; he just changed his name to a white-sounding name, John Jebrowski, and suddenly he was getting multiple interviews within a few days,” said the attorney Johannes Marko told CBS News Detroit.

After receiving the interview, Jackson reportedly revealed his true identity.

“Mr. Jackson confronted them and said, ‘I’m Dwight Jackson, I’m the guy applying for a job,’ and they said, ‘We’re done. We don’t want to hire you,’” Marko said.

In response to the accusation, the Shinola Hotel released a statement.

“We take this allegation very seriously and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind,” the hotel said in a statement. “We are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and are dedicated to building a diverse workforce that reflects our community.”

Since filing the lawsuit, Marko says he has received even more calls from people accusing the hotel of discrimination.
