Canadian national coach Jesse Marsh has announced that he has “no interest” in taking the vacant coaching position on the U.S. men’s national team.
On Wednesday, USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter was fired after the team was eliminated from the 2024 Copa America.
The US team failed to advance past the group stage, losing to Uruguay and Panama.
Marsh has led Canada to a battle for third place in the tournament and was previously reported to be among the candidates for the job.
However, Marsh made his intention to remain with Canada known by stating that he has no interest in becoming the US head coach.
“I’m not leaving this job, I have no interest in the American job and to be honest, unless there’s a big shift in the organisation, I don’t think I’ll ever have any interest in that job in the future. I’m really happy here, I couldn’t be happier actually in terms of what it’s like to work with the leaders in this organisation and what it’s like to work with this team,” Marsch said as quoted by Goal.com.
After Berhalter was sacked, he reflected on their performance in the tournament, saying in a statement: “The Copa America result is extremely disappointing and I take full responsibility for our performance. Our approach and process has always been focused on the 2026 World Cup and I am confident that this group will be one of the big stories in 2026.”
Sporting Director Matt Crocker thanked Berhalter for his efforts in developing the team, saying, “I want to thank Gregg for his hard work and dedication to U.S. Soccer and our men’s national team. We are now focused on working with our Sporting Director Matt Crocker and leveraging his experience at the highest level of the sport to ensure we find the right person to lead the USMNT into a new era of success on the field.”
Canada will face Uruguay on Saturday (local time) for third place in the 2024 Copa America.
