Incident on Berdan AvenueIncident on Berdan Avenue On July 20th, 2023, at approximately 7:20 p.m., police officers responded to a report of an assault on Berdan Avenue near Malcolm Terrace in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 70-year-old victim lying in the road with various bruises and cuts to his head. Investigation revealed that the victim had been struck by a vehicle driven by Norbetto P. Herrera, who had fled the scene. The victim and his 27-year-old son pursued Herrera to Berdan Avenue, where they confronted him. However, Herrera struck the victim again, performed a U-turn, and fled towards Plaza Road. The victim was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center by Fair Lawn Ambulance Corp and Valley Hospital paramedics. His injuries were non-life-threatening. Herrera was later apprehended at his residence, located less than a mile from the crime scene. He was charged with assault by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, unsafe lane change, and reckless driving. Herrera was subsequently released. The incident is still under investigation, and further details may emerge in the coming days.

Officers responded to Berdan Avenue near Malcolm Terrace around 7:20 p.m., where they found the victim lying in the road with several bruises and cuts to his head, said Sgt. Eric Eleshewich of the Fair Lawn Police Department.

Officers learned that Norbetto P. Herrera was driving a white Hyundai Sonata when he struck the victim’s 2003 Toyota Camry at Plaza Road and Fairmount Place and then drove off, the sergeant said.

The victim and his 27-year-old son followed Herrera to Berdan Avenue, where they got out of their car and attempted to identify the driver, police said. As they approached the Hyundai, Herrera struck the 70-year-old man, made a U-turn and drove back toward Plaza Road, Eleshewich said.

The victim was found at the scene, assisted by his uninjured son. He was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center by Fair Lawn Ambulance Corp and Valley Hospital paramedics, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

Boyd A. Loving took photographs of the crime scene and reported that Herrara was tracked down by police at his home less than a mile away.

Herrera was charged with assault by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, unsafe lane change and reckless driving. He was subsequently released.
