SSNIT Hotel Sale Sparks Labor Union OutcrySSNIT Hotel Sale Sparks Labor Union Outcry Accra, July 12, 2024 – The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) is calling for a nationwide workforce shutdown to protest the National Pensions Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) approval of the sale of 60% of shares in six hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City. Secretary General of the GFL, Abraham Koomson, expressed the Federation’s strong opposition to the sale, arguing that it would harm workers and undermine the financial stability of SSNIT. “If the hotel management is incompetent, they should be replaced to ensure better management of the hospitality facilities,” Koomson said. The unions are scheduled to hold an emergency meeting today to discuss the sale and consider further action. Background: The NPRA recently approved the sale of 60% of SSNIT’s hotel portfolio shares to Rock City, a private company. The decision has drawn widespread criticism from labor unions, who argue that the sale will lead to job losses and reduce the value of pension funds. SSNIT is a statutory trust that manages the pension funds of workers in the formal sector. The hotels in question are considered strategic assets and contribute to the overall financial health of the trust.
