Mirzapur is more than a hit series for Isha Talwar. The crime drama came to the actor, who has worked in Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil films since 2012, when she wanted to dig her toes more firmly into the Hindi entertainment industry. “When you start working in languages that you don’t speak, you start to doubt whether you can act or not, whether you understand the craft. I felt I should work more in Hindi,” she says of her early years in
the industry.

In 2020, Talwar was cast in the role of Madhuri Tripathi Yadav in Mirzapurs second season. Now that the third edition has been released online, her politician character has only become stronger and more confident. The actor’s self-assurance is evident off-screen as well. She says that attending three-month workshops with co-stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Vijay Varma and Rasika Dugal has influenced her. “I have gotten a taste of the kind of projects I want to do. That’s what I’m going to work towards with my future roles.”
Not many know that the actor comes from a film background – her father Vinod Talwar is an actor-producer. “OP Ralhan (filmmaker) was my father’s mother. The passion my father puts into his work is inspiring. That’s why I am the kind of person who didn’t give up even when I didn’t get work. When you grow up, you have this khayali pulao in your head that you will be launched as an actor. Then you realise that no one will give you work just for that.” Which brings us to the much-discussed topic of nepotism. Talwar says that star kids only get the benefit of a big launch. “After that, everyone has the same challenges. Your work speaks for itself.”
