And former England defender Glen Johnson believes VDB is just one example of the Red Devils’ lacklustre performances.

Johnson told Paddy Power: “Donny van de Beek has to go on the list of Manchester United’s biggest transfer failures.

“He signed with a great reputation, but nothing like this has ever happened to him.

“It seems like this happens quite often, especially at Manchester United.

“Players have private lives, they come with their families who may not be able to cope with the move very well. There are many factors, you don’t become a bad footballer overnight.”

‘Utd and Sancho must quit’

Manchester United and Jadon Sancho are called upon to make a clear decision.

Former England defender Glen Johnson also believes the uncertain winger “prefers to be the main player in a smaller pool”.

Johnson believes it would be better for all involved if Sancho leaves for good this summer.

His former club Borussia Dortmund, where the 24-year-old returned on loan, are reportedly priced out of the race, with him potentially costing more than £50m.

But former Liverpool and Chelsea star Johnson told Paddy Power: “I think Manchester United and Jadon Sancho should shake hands and get it over with.

“He has talent, but he hasn’t shown it at all at United.

“I don’t know what it is – I don’t know if he likes the players, the manager or Manchester, but as soon as he went back to Borussia Dortmund, he looked like a world champion again.

It seems like he would rather be the boss in a smaller pond.”

Mainoo tops Sun ratings for English starters

Kobbie Mainoo was the best player for Sun player Tom Barclay in the match against the Netherlands… except for Ollie Watkins, who decided the match in the closing stages!

Mainoo has become part of the Three Lions’ team at Euro 2024, just as he did at Manchester United during his breakthrough period in the Premier League.

And his versatile influence in midfield earned him an individual rating of 8 for tonight’s semi-final, behind Watkins’ 9 in the final minute.

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka and Manchester City’s Phil Foden were among the five England starters to score a 7.

Mainoo and Saka shine in dramatic English victory

First-half heroes Kobbie Mainoo and Bukayo Saka helped England to a dramatic 2-1 knockout of the Netherlands to reach the 2024 European Championship final against Spain on Sunday.

Manchester United midfielder Mainoo and Arsenal winger Saka were the Three Lions’ best players as they fought back to level the score, but both players faded slightly as the Dutch took a slight lead in the second period.

At half-time, United left-back Luke Shaw came on and played excellently in midfield.

But it was Ollie Watkins, replacing captain Harry Kane, who scored a sensational decisive goal in the 90th minute.

Mainoo and Saka were substituted in injury time.

Arsenal & Utd transfer target hit by injury

Serhou Guirassy’s move to Borussia Dortmund, after previously joining Arsenal and Manchester United, has hit a medical snag.

Dortmund say tests on the Stuttgart striker have revealed an injury.

The 28-year-old Guinean striker was linked with Premier League giants including the Gunners, United and Chelsea earlier this summer.

But he opted instead to move from last season’s surprise Bundesliga runners-up to the team that finished fifth in a deal believed to be worth around £15million.

However, Dortmund said in a statement tonight: “During a medical examination of Serhou Guirassy, an injury was discovered that requires further investigation.”

Mainoo and Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka were the star performers as the Three Lions deservedly fought back after Xavi Simons’ sensational opener was converted by a controversial Harry Kane penalty.

And the 19-year-old’s United team-mate Luke Shaw came on at half-time, filling the left midfield role that was perhaps England’s only weak point in a much better game.

One viewer said of Mainoo: “The world is seeing what United fans have been talking about all season.”

Another wrote: “Hype was focused on (Cole) Palmer being the game changer for England off the bench but it’s Kobbie Mainoo who has taken the opportunity and made the most of it. What a player.”
