The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

  • Bryce Harper (bruised left hand)
  • Status: Not in the lineup for the July 10 game against the Dodgers
  • A day after returning from the injured list with a hamstring injury, Harper is out of the lineup. His glove hand is sore after fielding a liner during the July 9 game against the Dodgers. Manager Rob Thomson said after the game that the swelling has gone down, but there is still bruising on Harper’s glove hand. He was not available as a substitute. They’ll see if he can play Thursday. • Taijuan hiker (inflammation of right index finger)
  • Status: 15 days on injured list, retroactive to June 22; out for the remainder of the first half
  • Walker has an inflammation in his right index finger and a blister on the inside (right). RHP Michael Mercado was called up to take his spot on the 26-man roster.
  • Walker threw a bullpen session on Wednesday, July 10. Thomson said his splitter looked good. He will either throw another bullpen session or throw live batting practice on Saturday, July 13. Thomson is unsure how many rehab starts Walker will need before he returns. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 10)
  • Zack Wheeler (back cramps)
  • Status: It is unclear whether he will start next time
  • Zack Wheeler was pulled early from his July 9 start against the Dodgers due to a left lower back strain. He had suffered back problems in each of his last two starts, but the Phillies were able to treat them and keep Wheeler on the mound.
  • An MRI of Wheeler’s back showed no structural damage, but he is still sore. It’s unclear whether Wheeler will make his next scheduled start on Sunday, July 14, against the Oakland Athletics. Thomson said the Phillies are ideally set up for a bullpen game if Wheeler can’t pitch because it’s the day before the break and Thomson can make sure all of his relievers are working for the layoff. • JT Realmuto (right knee surgery)
  • Status: 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 10; should be back for the second half
  • The Phillies announced on June 11 that Realmuto had been placed on the injured list due to right knee pain. He underwent a successful meniscectomy on his right knee on June 12. At the time he was placed on the IL, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski estimated that the team would miss Realmuto “approximately a month” following the completion of his procedure.
  • Realmuto said he initially suffered the tear during a rainy game in early May against the Giants as a third-round pick. He played through the injury, but couldn’t tolerate the pain, requiring surgery.
  • Realmuto took batting practice on the field again for the July 10 game against the Dodgers, aiming to return after the All-Star break. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 10)
  • Andrew Schilder (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Minor League 60-day injured list
  • The Phillies’ No. 1 prospect in the minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
  • Painter throws 25-pitch bullpens every Tuesday and Friday. He currently only throws fastballs and changeups. Thomson did not rule out the 21-year-old pitching in simulated games — which are controlled settings — before the end of the year. However, he does not believe he will pitch for an affiliate in 2024. • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Injured list of 15 days
  • Ortiz will undergo Tommy John surgery on July 11, Thomson announced. Ortiz previously left a rehab stint with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on June 18 with forearm discomfort. (Updated by Tim Kelly on June 29)
  • Spencer Turnbull (right lat tension)
  • Status: 15 days on injured list, out for 6-8 weeks
  • Turnbull is out until August with a right lat strain. He was pulled from his starting position after three innings on June 26 against the Detroit Tigers because of right shoulder soreness. He expressed optimism about his status to reporters in Detroit after the game, but tests revealed a more serious injury.
  • “Given his injury history we’re going to be cautious with him and make sure we get this right,” Thomson said on June 27.Updated by Destiny Lugardo on June 28)
  • Michael Rucker (arterial vasospasm in the right hand)
  • Status: 60-day injured list
  • Rucker threw a bullpen session on May 14 and is scheduled to throw another on May 17.
  • On June 3, Rucker was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
  • Rucker is scheduled to play for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on June 21. (Updated by Tim Kelly on June 2 19)
  • Dylan Covey (right shoulder strain)
  • Status: 60-day injured list
  • Covey is still nursing a shoulder injury and has been out of action. While doing some conditioning, he also pulled a small hamstring. He was in Philadelphia to see team doctors on May 8, but was expected to return to Clearwater on May 10.
  • On June 1, Covey was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. (Updated by Bailey Digh on June 4)
