Ethan Whitney made match play look relatively easy on Wednesday.

The Westminster native and Oak Hill Country Club member cruised through both his round of 32 and round of 16 matches at the 116th Massachusetts Amateur Championship, securing at least one more round at Framingham Country Club.

The Temple University rising senior dispatched Woodland Golf Club’s Patrick Kilcoyne, 7 & 5, in the morning before getting past Jake Mrva of Worcester Country Club, 2 & 1, to reach the tournament’s quarterfinals.

Whitney advances to face defending champion GreatHorse’s Ryan Downes in the quarterfinals, with the duo teeing off at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The pairing is a rematch of a round of 16 clash between the two last year.

Downes is coming off a round of 16 win over Long Meadow Golf Club’s Trevor Drew, a convincing 4 & 3 victory.

Even through three holes, Whitney took the lead on the fourth hole and never looked back. He claimed wins on the eighth and ninth, before taking the next four holes after the turn to close out the victory over Kilcoyne, 7 & 5.

in the round of 16, Whitney went 3 up through 15 before Mrva claimed the 16th hole. However, it was too little, too late as Whitney held on for the victory.

Whitney finished two rounds of stroke play at 3-under to tie for fifth entering match play, shooting an even-par 72 on Monday before carding a 69 on Tuesday.
