Lanes were closed and delays expected Wednesday morning after a fatal crash on the I-90 Kennedy Expressway near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

At 4:31 a.m., Illinois State Troopers responded to a fatal two-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-90 near Cumberland.

By 6 a.m., all lanes of I-90 were closed near Cumberland due to the crash, ISP said. A detour was in effect near Canfield.

An NBC 5 Traffic reporter noted that the detour is very helpful for people going to the airport.

“But if you have to shorten a flight, it causes stress,” Martin said.

Photos and videos from the scene showed a heavy police presence and traffic beginning to increase.

The crash comes as rain from the remnants of what was once Hurricane Beryl continues to batter much of the Chicago area, with rain expected to continue until about 11 a.m.

“Know that the roads are going to be wet,” NBC 5 meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said. “Definitely take it easy during the morning rush hour.”
