Located at The Queen Katherine School’s Appleby Road Community Garden, the site features various composting systems showcased by volunteer Master Composters from Garden Organic. The site aims to provide hands-on experience and information on the ease of composting at home. Garden groups and organizations can book visits for talks and demonstrations, while information boards guide visitors through the process independently. Garden Organic has trained Master Composters to educate the public on home composting through presentations and events. This site complements the council’s ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and waste processing. Councillor Giles Archibald, Cabinet Member for Climate, Biodiversity and Environment, emphasized the importance of the site, stating, “Composting organic waste at home helps reduce carbon emissions and waste. We want to encourage more people to compost, and this site, along with another one near Penrith, will provide valuable guidance.” The public is invited to visit the Appleby Road Community Garden on Saturday between 10am and 3pm for a tour, tea, and family-friendly activities.

A new composting demonstration site is opening in Kendal this weekend, aiming to encourage home composting.

The second of three composting demonstration sites in Westmorland and Furness opens this weekend (Saturday 13 July) at The Queen Katherine School’s Appleby Road Community Garden in Kendal.

Thanks to funding from Westmorland and Furness Borough Council and additional funding from Cumbria Action for Sustainability’s Community Fund and the Frieda Scott Charitable Trust, the new composting site has been set up so the public can experience how easy it is to compost at home.

The site will be used by volunteer Master Composters from the organic gardening organisation Garden Organic to explain the different composting systems. Garden groups and other organisations will be able to book visits to the site for talks and demonstrations, and a series of information boards will also allow people to look around the site independently.

Garden Organic has been employed by the council for a number of years to train Master Composters to provide advice on home composting to local residents. As part of this work, the volunteers give presentations and attend events to promote and encourage home composting.

Everyone is welcome to come along on Saturday. Feel free to drop by between 10am and 3pm for a cup of tea and a stroll around the garden. You can also join in with the family-friendly activities, such as outdoor mosaics, seed bomb making and much more.

Councillor Giles Archibald, Cabinet Member for Climate, Biodiversity and Environment, said:

“I am delighted that the council is supporting and helping to fund the Appleby Road Community Garden in Kendal, the second of three composting demonstration sites we are opening in Westmorland and Furness.

“It is an excellent organically managed site and part of a wider network of similar sites in Westmorland, Furness and Cumberland, established by Garden Organic’s Master Composter programme in partnership with partners in the region.

“Composting organic waste at home not only helps to reduce carbon emissions but is also a great way to reduce the amount of waste sent for processing. We want to get more people into composting at home so I’m sure this site, along with another one coming soon near Penrith, will be a valuable way to show people how easy it can be.”

“I urge everyone to compost at home, and for those who live nearby and want to find out more, visit the Appleby Road Community Garden.”
