The partnership commenced with an intensive training camp led by Benfica coaches Carlos Garcia and Pedro Jeronimo for 50 male and female players aged 10 to 17. This initiative forms part of Phoenix Handball Club’s international cooperation strategy. Club President Orlando Bonnici hailed the partnership as a significant milestone for the club and Maltese handball. He emphasized the opportunities it provides for aspiring athletes and the potential for promising players to pursue professional careers in the sport. SL Benfica, a renowned handball team based in Lisbon, boasts a rich history with numerous domestic and international accolades, including the 2021-22 EHF European League title. This partnership enables Maltese players to benefit from the expertise and experience of Benfica’s coaching staff. The training camp held at the Ħamrun Handball Pavilion from July 2nd to 4th marked the start of a collaborative effort to enhance the skills and knowledge of Maltese handball players. Through this partnership, Phoenix Handball Club aims to provide a pathway for the development of local talent and foster a passion for the sport among the youth of Malta.

Training programs will enhance the development of Maltese players on the island

Phoenix Handball Club Malta has announced a transformative partnership with SL Benfica, reinforcing its commitment to the development of the local youth handball sport.

This historic partnership kicked off last week with an intensive training camp for 50 Phoenix Handball players.

This group consisted of boys and girls aged 10 to 17 years.

Two SL Benfica coaches, Carlos Garcia and Pedro Jeronimo, were in Malta to lead this training camp. This event was held at the Ħamrun Handball Pavilion from 2nd to 4th July.

This initiative marks a crucial step in the Phoenix Handball Club’s broader strategy for international cooperation.

Phoenix Club President Orlando Bonnici said: “It is an important milestone, not only for our club, but also for the local handball scene. We are honoured to partner with a club that has a vast experience in international sports.

“We are excited about this partnership with SL Benfica, as we believe it will provide opportunities for future athletes and also show that handball can be taken up professionally by promising players, even beyond our borders.”

Sport Lisboa e Benfica, better known as Benfica, is a professional handball team from Lisbon, Portugal.

Benfica plays in the top national league, Andebol 1, and plays its home games at the Pavilhão da Luz No 2.

Since its foundation in 1932, Benfica has won seven Portuguese league titles, six Portuguese cups, two Portuguese League Cups and seven Portuguese Super Cups.

At international level, Benfica won the EHF European League in 2021–22, becoming the first Portuguese club to win the competition.
