This move, announced by Ola co-founder and chairman Bhavish Aggarwal, is expected to save the company approximately Rs 100 crore per year. Last month, Ola had also severed ties with Microsoft Azure and migrated its entire workload to its own artificial intelligence (AI) company, Krutrim. Aggarwal took to social media to inform users about the change, requesting them to check and update their Ola apps if necessary. “After leaving Azure last month, we have now completely left Google Maps. We used to spend ₹100 cr per year, but we have reduced that to 0 this month by completely switching to our own Ola maps! Check your Ola app and update if required,” Aggarwal tweeted. Ola Maps currently offers services to Ola’s flagship taxi app, Ola Cabs. The company plans to introduce several new features to its mapping platform in the near future, including Street View, NERFs (Neural Radiance Fields), indoor imagery, 3D maps, and drone maps. “Many more features coming soon – Street View, NERFs, indoor views, 3D maps, drone maps, etc!” Aggarwal said in a social media post. Ola’s move to develop its own mapping solution is part of its broader strategy to reduce its reliance on external vendors and enhance its technological capabilities. The company had acquired Pune-based geographic services company GeoSpoc in October 2021. Aggarwal has also hinted at the possibility of Ola producing its own cells for its products in the near future. “Early next year we will see our own cells in our own products,” he recently said. Ola is currently constructing a battery cell gigafactory in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district.
