Compared to the corresponding period last year, a 21 percent increase was observed with 9,837 drunk driving fines issued for this offence in 2023.

The police have also conducted an area analysis in Delhi, showing the places where such offenders are most prevalent in the current year. The areas include Rajouri Garden, Samaypur Badli, Rohini, Mehrauli, Mayur Vihar, Karol Bagh. In the Rajouri Garden area alone, a total of 770 fines have been issued in the last six months.

In April, the Delhi Traffic Police reported that the number of drunk driving tickets registered in the first three months of 2024 saw a staggering increase of 1,550 percent compared to the same period in 2022. This worrying trend underscores the urgent need for greater awareness and strict enforcement of traffic rules to ensure public safety on Delhi’s roads, the police said.

The sharp rise in the number of fines is the result of the strict approach to drunk driving by the traffic police following the increase in the number of drunk driving cases. Driving in a drunken state not only endangers the life of the driver but also endangers the lives of pedestrians and other motorists on the road, they added.

“As per statistics, there has been a notable increase in the number of drunk driving related cases during January-March 2024 as compared to the corresponding period in previous years.
