Some neighbors would make it their life’s work to make things as difficult as possible for you, and there’s nothing you can do about it!

Find out more about this annoying Susan!

I used to be responsible for garden and grounds matters at a project developer.

“Susan” poked her head over her neighbor’s fence. (Susan was abrupt and rude, but not quite on the level of “Karen,” so it’s “Susan.”)

Some dialogues were exchanged…

“Are you going to cut back all the weeds growing on my side of the fence?”

‘Yes, I need to reclaim this public footpath and that same weed is on council land (local authority) but will also cause me problems if I don’t do something about it. I’m here now to do that.’

‘Because it’s ‘your company’ land and I expect it to be mowed all the way around (points to all three sides of her long white garden fence). Look, it’s all growing over into my garden and nothing has been done to it since (your company) bought the land.

“That’s actually why I’m hired full-time, I’m not part of the development crew, I’m here to maintain areas and deal with these kinds of issues. I can remove the ivy from your fence today, but that triangle of wilderness between yours, ours and the council’s will have to happen sometime next week.”

“You’re going to cut on the other side? (Moves to where I can’t see because of the triangle of wilderness)”

‘Not really, that side is between you and the council. That school on the other side doesn’t open for another year, so I suggest you don’t wait until then to contact them.

They had some questions!

‘Well, what should I do then?’

“I’m happy to just cut the ivy for you this one time and apply the poison along the fence, that’s enough for now. (The company I work for is trying to improve relations) and like I said, I’ll be dealing with this one side indefinitely.”

“I want you to prove that you are not responsible for that side as well.”

He is doing a fact check.

The next day I consult my drawing (map) of the terrain and the property line. It turns out I have been misinformed. My manager explicitly forbids me to do anything that even remotely approaches her fence line.

“Are you back to log this area?”

“I’m glad you’re here (shows drawing). This is the area in question and it’s all municipal property. The yellow line is where my responsibility ends.”

Susan was annoying with her choices…

Susan has NEVER had anyone cut down the vegetation. Ivy, brambles and nettles have eaten her fences completely over the next 3 years and last time I checked they had been replaced a metre inside the boundary.

Demi Karen takes a chance and ends up losing free maintenance along her fence. She once asked me to put “lots of poison” on the offending weeds, but all I could offer her was a regular spray that my company provides when she calls.

She refused to respond.

I said they might offer it for the same price I would pay to have a driveway installed, but she never called.

Oops! Susan would never budge from her position and it shows!
