The latest hot topic in the Aldi Mums Facebook group isn’t about a sale or a new Special Buy in the aisle, but rather — if you can believe it — a curious discovery inside an unassuming bottle of white vinegar. One shopper’s photo of a sticky, slimy goo in their vinegar bottle has sent many thinking and rushing to their keyboards to speculate about what’s lurking in the vinegar.

The astonished mum posted a photo of her find and asked: “Anyone else had any problems with Aldi vinegar? Never opened it and it looks like this.” The post quickly sparked a flurry of responses, with curious users and vinegar enthusiasts alike commenting. It turns out the mysterious substance isn’t as sinister or unusual as you might think.

“I’m pretty sure it’s the vinegar mother,” one astute member noted. “You can feed it and it will keep making vinegar.”

The discovery led to discussions and revelations within the group. The members wanted to investigate this unusual phenomenon further. Many admitted that it was completely new to them.

“I was 10 years old today when I read this post and learned about the ‘mother’. Never seen or heard of it before and I buy loads of vinegar from Aldi!” confessed one surprised member.

Another admitted: “I’ve seen the ‘mother’ before. I just didn’t know what it was!”

Some were surprised. “I had no idea what it was until now, except that it was extremely dirty,” said a third member, “it looks like something I can’t name.”

One user explained it further, saying, “Real vinegar is made with a yeast/bacteria scoby-like mother. It’s not harmful.” Another enthusiast suggested, “Put that in a bottle of white wine and you can make your own white wine vinegar, it’s amazing.”

Many expressed their surprise at the new knowledge. “OMG this is why I love the internet, learning is available. I don’t know where I thought vinegar came from, I never thought about it.”

Not everyone was thrilled with the discovery, however, with reactions ranging from intrigued to downright disgusted.

“This is the creepiest conversation I’ve ever seen,” one person exclaimed, while another simply exclaimed, “Yuck!” The comparisons to hair gel and other unspeakable things only added to the mix of reactions.

One group member joked, “Where have I been the last 46 years?”
