Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders proved once again that they are a force to be reckoned with after their 36-5 victory over Bethal last weekend.

The Highlanders showed that their only intention is to run with the ball and score tries, scoring six tries in an entertaining display.

Highlanders head coach André ‘Swanie’ Swanepoel said Bethal started strongly but were let down by their inability to finish the game. Once their defence was broken down, it was all over for them.

The Highlanders’ defense, on the other hand, was solid, which Bethal found difficult to overcome.

The forwards provided ‘good, clean ball’ for the backs. From the lineouts and scrums, all eight players are to be commended for their efforts.

Mnelisi Gumede (9), who scored an impressive hat-trick and has only recently started playing with number 9, impressed with his pace and supporting play.

Wicus Coetsee (10) controlled the game excellently, while Gift Mabaso (12) played a solid game in attack and defense.

“We set a target at the start of the season to win two away games and all our home games. We are just one game away from achieving this target,” said Swanepoel.

Points scored in the match: Mnelisis (9): three tries; Siwela (7): one try; Manele (6): one try; Veggie (11): one try; and Wessel (15): kicked three conversions.

Highlanders II also won their match against Bethal II with a score of 24-5, with Zungu (2), Wynand Kritzinger (8) and Janri (10) drawing attention.

Highlanders III played against Rugby Club Utrecht on Friday evening and defeated them 71-10.

Highlanders I and II will take on Witbank Rugby Club on Saturday at 2pm and 3.30pm at the Arbor Park Sports Grounds.

Highlanders IV will take on Ladysmith Rugby Club at 2pm on their B-field.
