The bulk of the charges were for speeding (1,309), followed by stunt driving (47), driving under the influence (87), distracted driving (24), and failure to wear a seat belt (134). Other violations included failure to wear a life jacket for boat operators (32) and failure to wear a helmet for all-terrain vehicles (11). The OPP also issued nearly 900 warnings during the initiative. Inspector Walid Kandar, OPP East Region Traffic & Marine Manager, said the number of violations is alarming, particularly when it comes to seat belts, life jackets, and helmets. He emphasized the importance of these safety measures and warned that officers will be out all summer enforcing the law on the roads and on the water.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), a total of 2,412 tickets were issued in eastern Ontario during the Canada Day traffic initiative that took place from June 21 to July 1.

The charges include 1,309 for speeding, 47 for stunt driving, 87 for driving under the influence, 24 for distracted driving, 134 for failure to wear a seat belt, 32 for failure to wear a life jacket for boat operators and 11 for helmets for all-terrain vehicles.

“The remaining charges fall under the Highway Traffic Act, the Liquor Licence Act, the Off Road Vehicles Act, the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and the Canada Shipping Act,” the OPP said in a news release on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, nearly 900 warnings were also issued by the OPP in the region.

“The number of violations our officers have seen during this time is alarming, particularly when it comes to seat belts, life jackets and helmets. We all know they can save lives. When it comes to speeding, we also know that the severity of collisions increases at higher speeds,” said Inspector Walid Kandar, OPP East Region Traffic & Marine Manager.

The OPP warns that officers will be out all summer enforcing the law, both on the roads and on the water.
