Theatre star Sarah O’Connor has said she is “quite emotional” as she prepares to return home with hit musical Wicked for the first time since marrying last September.

Sarah, originally from Lucan, County Dublin, who plays the lead role of Glinda, met her current husband and agent, Sam Day, on the 10th anniversary of the iconic show.

The show has played a central role in their love story – Sam was the one who broke the news to her that she had been given the lead role. After they got married last September, the actor immediately went on tour.

And ahead of the performance at the Bord Gáis Theatre late next month, Ms O’Connor said she can’t wait to perform in front of Irish audiences again.

She said: “It’s hard to express how exciting it is to finally come home to Dublin and play Glinda – an iconic role in one of the greatest musicals ever written,” she said.

“It’s really incredible. I think I get emotional sometimes. I’m really excited to just enjoy it with the Irish crowd and feel the energy.

‘You know, even when I walk down the street and hear the accents, I get so happy. Then I don’t stand out anymore and that’s really nice.

“I can’t wait to just get settled and hang out in Dublin for a while and just have a nice summer. It’s going to be great.’

Ms O’Connor, who has toured the world with the show and lived in London for the past 16 years, said of performing for home audiences: ‘They’re on your side. They’re very cheerful in that sense and they’re just relaxed. They’re good company. It’s not all like, “Oh, this is what I think of the show”, like none of that (cute). They’re just there to have a good time. We just give them entertainment and away we go. I just think it’s very relaxed in that sense.

“They want to be entertained and we want to do that. It’s a happy mix.”

It was a big year for the Tony Award-winning musical, now in Jon Chu’s film adaptation starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
