According to the hospital’s executive director, the decision was inevitable due to limited resources. The hospital will relieve all affected employees of their duties effective July 1. Employees protested the decision, arguing that the hospital is already understaffed and the layoffs will further exacerbate the situation. They urged the administration to reconsider. The move comes as Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah recently approved an additional budget for the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). This budget increase included an expansion in the number of postgraduate (PG) positions to address the growing demand for medical services. The Chief Minister’s approval added 200 new PG seats to JPMC, bringing the total number to 953. The action aims to alleviate the shortage of doctors at the hospital.

KARACHI: In a shocking move, Jinnah Hospital Karachi has laid off 168 employees due to shortage of funds, ARY News reported.

According to details, the affected employees were initially hired on a three-month contract during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The list of dismissed workers includes 33 sweepers, 36 nurses, 27 ward boys and 18 security guards.

According to the hospital’s executive director, the decision was made due to financial constraints and all affected employees will be relieved of their duties as of July 1.

The employees urged the administration that the hospital is already facing staff shortages and that they should not be dismissed.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah approved an additional budget for the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), besides increasing the number of graduates (PGs) to meet the growing needs.

The Chief Minister granted the approval during his meeting with the , who called on him at CM House here.

Executive Director of JPMC Prof. Dr. Giving a detailed briefing to the Chief Minister, Shahid Rasool said that the JPMC was a 16-bed hospital and has now become a 2,200-bed hospital but there was an acute shortage of doctors.

Sindh CM took into account the doctors’ demand and approved additional positions/seats of Prost Graduates (PGs) against 200. After the approval of new 200 PG seats, the number of PGs reached 953.
