Leeds clearly needed a big name sale before July 1 to feel like they were going to play by the rules. The July 1 deadline has become a mini-deadline for clubs to sell to avoid points deductions.

That also appears to be the case at Newcastle and Leicester, who almost sold Yankuba Minteh to Burnley and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea, resulting in Enzo Maresca moving to his old club.

Leeds didn’t need the initial £190m demands but had to sell a big player to get them over the line. Gray is certain to get a pay rise, with Alex Crook of talkSPORT claiming he is on £75,000-a-week.

The 49ers are not delusional, they know that selling Gray will hurt Leeds fans and weaken their relationship with them. Letting Gray go will have been their very last resort this summer.
