MINOT — A 45-year-old New Town man was seriously injured after crashing into a stack of hay bales in Ward County.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, an officer attempted to stop the man, who was driving a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500, for a traffic violation on Highway 2. The driver fled, prompting troopers to pursue.
The pickup left Highway 2 and traveled west on Ward County Road 12 before turning south on 156 Street Southwest. Spikes disabled the pickup, which then drove south on Ward County Road 14 and into a field.
Troopers set up a perimeter around the field, the Highway Patrol said, and then discovered the pickup had crashed into a “large stack of round bales,” a news release said.
Neither the driver nor the passenger, a 45-year-old Stanley woman, were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Both were seriously injured and taken to Trinity Hospital in Minot.
The driver was charged with driving under suspension, fleeing a peace officer and aggravated reckless driving, the release said.
The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and pursuit.
The chase took place about 10 miles south of Minot.
