The coal arrived at Kanengo station on Wednesday via a train from Moatize. This delivery follows the establishment of a rail connection between Balaka and Lilongwe, which connects traders and importers from the Central and Northern Regions of Malawi, as well as Zambia, to rail transportation from Kanengo. Previously, they had to travel to Liwonde or Limbe to load or receive their goods. The new rail connection is expected to significantly reduce the costs of transporting goods to various destinations. It also provides connectivity to major trade destinations outside of Malawi, including the ports of Nacala, Moatize, and Beira. Nacala Logistics has assured coal users that they will continue to provide reliable and efficient coal supplies from Mozambique to meet the growing demand in Lilongwe.

On Wednesday, a train carrying a load of coal for Shayona Cement Limited successfully arrived at Kanengo station from Moatize.
This is a follow-up to the successful rail connection between Balaka and Lilongwe.
In this regard, traders/importers and exporters from the Central and Northern Regions and Zambia are now connected to rail from Kanengo and no longer need to go to Liwonde or Limbe to load or receive their goods.
The rail connection is expected to have a positive effect on the costs of transporting goods to different destinations.
Major trade destinations outside Malawi that are connected by rail currently include the ports of Nacala and Moatize and the port of Beira, which is connected by the Marka railway line currently under construction.
