This is a unique opportunity to own a piece of art history: an East Hampton home once owned by famed American artist Saul Steinberg has gone up for sale.

Steinberg, best known for his work for the New Yorker magazine, owned the home on Old Stone Highway. The property, which combines historic charm with modern amenities in a prime Hamptons location, is now on the market for $4.1 million.

Over a career spanning six decades, Steinberg created more than 80 covers and contributed more than 600 drawings to the New Yorker, shaping the magazine’s visual identity.

His most famous work, the 1976 cover “View of the World from 9th Avenue,” humorously depicted a New York-centric worldview and became an iconic image of the time.

In 1959, Steinberg bought the house after his friend, the Italian sculptor Costantino Nivola, heard about it.

Over the years, he expanded the property by acquiring additional lots. Steinberg initially worked in the living room, but in 1973 he built a studio on the property, to supplement his New York City studio.

Although the studio has since been renovated into additional bedrooms, the house still retains much of its original charm.

The Springs, where the property is located, has long attracted artists with its inspiring landscape and proximity to the water. Steinberg’s house became a meeting place for famous artists and writers, including Willem de Kooning, Aldo Buzzi and Harold Rosenberg.

When Steinberg died in 1999, he left the property to his niece, who is now selling it.

The residence features seven bedrooms, four bathrooms, vaulted ceilings, a new in-ground pool and two barn-style garages with a quaint two-bedroom cottage. It covers 5,000 square meters on almost two hectares of land.
