His wife never expected Perry to be the victim of a horrific shark attack. “It’s like knowing you could get in a car and have a car accident,” Emilia Perry told the New York Post. “You don’t do it, you don’t do it, you don’t do it, then you do it.”
Perry died after a shark attacked him on his surfboard. Over the years, Perry has gotten himself into dangerous situations in the name of the sport he loves. One time, a nasty gash in his leg nearly severed his femoral artery while surfing. Another time, a surfboard hit him on the head.

Emilia said her husband had a larger-than-life attitude. The two were happy together after meeting in 1998 while surfing at Banzai Pipeline, a reef on the north coast. It is the same beach where Perry became a lifeguard and the latter died.
“We had so much fun. It was amazing. He had a really beautiful, full life. It was really fun. Just laughing all the time,” Emilia said. She said her husband enjoyed being there saving people.
“He’s done a lot of rescues. He’s gotten his best friends out. He’s gotten strangers out. None of it is easy, it’s a very heroic job,” Emilia said. “It’s crazy — every resuscitation case Tomayo has worked on has come back.”
After his death, people all over the world sent their condolences.

His friends miss him.
