Nigerian Immigration Officer Sentenced for Job ScamNigerian Immigration Officer Sentenced for Job Scam A Nigerian Immigration Service employee, Dabiet Gilbert, has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Gombe State High Court for involvement in a job scam. Gilbert, originally accused of defrauding Akoh Accoustic of 800,000 naira with the promise of a job in the Nigerian Prison Service, pleaded guilty to the single charge of fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC investigation revealed that Gilbert had falsely represented the money as being for employment in the Nigerian Correctional Services, knowing that it was a false pretense. The defense counsel pleaded for leniency, but Judge HH Kereng ultimately sentenced Gilbert to one year imprisonment with an option of a fine of N60,000. Gilbert’s downfall began when his victim filed a petition with the EFCC after realizing he had been scammed and his attempts to recover his money had failed. The EFCC investigation led to Gilbert’s arrest and subsequent sentencing.

A Nigerian Immigration Service employee, Dabiet Gilbert, has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Gombe State High Court for job scams.

It was established that Gilbert was accused of defrauding Akoh Accoustic of 800,000 naira with the promise of a job with the Nigerian Prison Service.

According to the allegation: “That you Dabiet Gilbert on or about May 28, 2021 at Gombe, Gombe State within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N800,000.00 from Akoh Daniel Accoustic by falsely representing that the This amount was for employment in the Nigerian Correctional Services, pretending to know that it was false and thereby committing an offense contrary to Section 320 and punishable under Section 322 of the Criminal Code.”

When brought before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, he pleaded guilty to the single charge of fraud brought against him.

A statement on Friday by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said: “Gilbert pleaded “guilty” to his only charge, prompting the prosecutor, AM Labaran, to pray the court to convict and sentence him accordingly, though the defense counsel, Yusuf Ali, pleaded with the court seeking to temper justice with mercy, Haruna pleaded “guilty” to only two of his charges, prompting the prosecutor, M.Ugbe, to pray the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.

“Judge HH Kereng subsequently sentenced Gilbert to one year imprisonment with an option of a fine of N60,000.”

Oyewale explained that Gilbert’s journey to prison began when his victim petitioned the EFCC after realizing he had been scammed into a non-existent job with the Nigerian Correctional Service and attempts to recover his money failed.
