PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A driver who crashed into a building on Smith Street this morning fled on foot, according to officials.

The car ended up at an empty business just after 4 a.m. this morning.

When officials arrived, no residents were present upon arrival.

Police said there was significant structural damage to the building and vehicle.

The vehicle drove through the glass and block front wall, through a very empty store and through the solid block back wall.

The Providence Building Inspector was also on scene.

There was no damage to the loading points or columns holding up the roof.
