Impact of AI on CreativityImpact of AI on Creativity OpenAI’s Mira Murati believes AI can enhance creativity but also potentially eliminate certain creative jobs. AI as a Collaborative Tool Murati sees AI as a valuable tool that can lower the barrier to creativity and increase its accessibility. It can assist in scriptwriting, movie production, and various creative endeavors. Potential Disruption However, Murati also recognizes the disruptive potential of AI in creative industries. She suggests that some creative jobs may become obsolete if their output lacks sufficient quality. Generative AI and Human Creativity Experts note that generative AI learns differently from humans and lacks the full understanding of creativity and consciousness. Nevertheless, AI can still have a significant impact on the job market. Disruption in the Music Industry The music industry is actively addressing the potential impact of AI. Artists have expressed concerns about the use of their work to train AI models without their consent or compensation. OpenAI’s Approach Murati assures that OpenAI provides users with control over data usage and is experimenting with methods to compensate users for data contributions. OpenAI’s chief technology officer Mira Murati says AI can help boost people’s creativity, but the technology could also wipe out some creative jobs.

On June 19, Dartmouth College’s engineering school held a discussion with Murati about the potential impacts that OpenAI’s tools, such as ChatGPT, could have on various industries. During the conversation, the Dartmouth alum was asked if they could write scripts and make movies.

“It can certainly do that as a tool,” she said. “I expect that we will collaborate with it and that it will increase our creativity.”

OpenAI’s tools will “lower the barrier for anyone to consider themselves creative,” she added.

However, she also said that AI tools could have a potentially disruptive impact on the creative industries. “Some creative jobs may disappear, but perhaps they shouldn’t have been there in the first place if the content that comes out of them is not of very high quality,” she said.

Ultimately, “I truly believe that using it as a tool for education (and) creativity will increase our intelligence, creativity and imagination.”

Will AI replace humans? It depends on who you ask

When it comes to the question of whether generative AI tools will be able to completely replace human creativity, the answer is often complicated for a number of reasons.

First, generative AI learns differently than humans.

Major language models, image generators, and other generative AI tools use powerful algorithms to identify patterns in the datasets they are trained on and use that information to generate new image, text, or audio output based on users’ cues.

But people still don’t have a clear picture of how we learn, remember knowledge and develop creativity, says Theo Omtzigt, Chief Technology Officer at Lemurian Labs.

“If we don’t have a mathematical understanding, or a scientific understanding, of what creates consciousness or creativity, we have no mechanism to put that into an artificial system,” he told CNBC Make It in December.

Generative AI can still be disruptive

That’s not to say generative AI tools won’t cause disruption.

Nearly 12 million workers in the United States may need to find new jobs thanks to generative AI by 2030, according to a May report from the McKinsey Global Institute. According to the study, the main job categories expected to be affected are office workers, customer service representatives and production workers, such as manufacturing workers.

But some members of the music industry are already trying to get ahead of AI’s potential impact.

In April, more than 200 artists, including Billie Eilish and Nicki Minaj, signed an open letter calling for protections against the “predatory use of AI” within their industries.

“Some of the largest and most powerful companies are using our work without permission to train AI models,” the letter says. “If left unchecked, AI will trigger a race to the bottom that will degrade the value of our work and prevent us from being fairly compensated for it.”

At Dartmouth, Dr. Joy Buolamwini, an AI expert and author of ‘Unmasking AI’, Murati on the concerns many creatives have about their work being used to train AI models without their consent.

OpenAI “gives people a lot of control over how their data is used” in its products and that users have the option to have their data removed from the training set, Murati said. The company is also “experimenting with methods to essentially create tools that allow people to be compensated for data contributions.”
