NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – More than 1 million people tried to get free tickets to the Macy’s Fireworks show on the Fourth of July, according to a spokesperson for Mayor Eric Adams’ office.

The huge demand forced sales to halt a day after the city opened up 10,000 free front-row tickets for the show at Pier 45 and Pier 84 of Manhattan’s Hudson River Park.

The website where tickets were offered crashed on Wednesday and indicated that all tickets were sold out. Shortly afterwards, the website was updated to display a message that read: ‘Thank you for your interest. The next batch of tickets will be available tomorrow.”

The website will list more tickets at 10 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

You don’t need to buy a ticket to see the fireworks show: it’s free and open to the public.

Some New York City businesses sell tickets to watch the fireworks with smaller audiences and other events like cocktails and DJs, but the tickets can cost well over $100 to get. Some places that host viewing parties include the Gansevoort hotel and Verano.

Macy’s itself does not sell tickets to VIP viewing locations or parties.

The fireworks display will begin around 9:25 p.m. on July 4 and will include more than 30 colors and “never-before-seen effects.” The fireworks will be fired from five spots between West 14th Street and West 34th Street on the Hudson River, up to 1,000 feet in the air, Macy’s representatives said.
