Considering Richard’s tumultuous marriage to Andrea Thompson in the eleventh season of the marriage experiment, he definitely has a unique insight into the process.

On Instagram, the 62-year-old said in June that he was often questioned about “how real” MAFS is.
“It’s a fascinating question because people want to know if what they saw was ‘the truth’ or not; whatever ‘the truth’ is,” Richard wrote.
“I estimate that I filmed and recorded a total of 200 hours during the twelve weeks I was filming. I also estimate that my total airtime (of all 38 episodes and given that there are 24 participants) is 3 hours.”
According to his summary, Richard claimed that only one and a half percent of what was filmed “made it into the final cut.”
“98.5 percent of what I did and said didn’t make it,” he explained.
“Did I do that 1.5 percent? Sure, I did. That was real. The context was not always explained or understood. A lot of ‘nice’ things have been left out. But hey, that’s reality TV, and we all knew it going into it.

Richard went on to tell fans that “producers want to film a story that will attract viewers, ratings and commercial success.”
“They even choose characters for the story; for example, the ‘bad guy’ is a notorious one MAFS character. This is how and why they choose us.”

“Because that’s not right,” he admitted. And no sh*t!
“Arguments, dramas, mistakes, scandals and walk-outs do that too. And that puts a very negative spin on ‘reality’.”
When Richard’s post was shared on the So dramatic! On the podcast’s Instagram page, several reality stars agreed with his sentiment.
