Community Garden Meets Need

A community garden in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, is providing fresh produce to those in need. The garden, located at the Alderney Landing Community Centre, is a partnership between the centre and the Halifax Seed Library. It provides free produce to low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities. The garden is run by volunteers, who plant, water, and harvest the produce. The produce is then distributed to local organizations, such as food banks and soup kitchens. The garden has been a success since it opened in 2017. In its first year, it produced over 1,000 pounds of produce. The garden is more than just a source of fresh food. It is also a place for people to come together and connect with their community. “The garden is a great way to get people involved in their community and to learn about where their food comes from,” said Sarah Derworiz, the executive director of the Halifax Seed Library. The garden is also an important part of the local food system. It helps to reduce food insecurity and promote healthy eating. “The garden is a win-win for everyone involved,” said Derworiz. “It provides fresh food to those in need and it helps to build a stronger community.” If you are interested in volunteering at the community garden, please contact the Alderney Landing Community Centre.
