Blawnox Community Garden Marks the First Planting of the Season; Helpers Hope for a Bountiful Harvest

Blawnox, PA – The Blawnox Community Garden kicked off the 2023 growing season with its first planting event on Saturday, April 29th. Volunteers from the community gathered to till the soil, plant seedlings, and spread mulch. This year, the garden will feature a variety of vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, zucchini, and beans. There will also be a section dedicated to herbs and flowers. The Blawnox Community Garden is a non-profit organization that provides a shared space for residents to grow their own food. The garden is located on a vacant lot at the corner of Freeport Road and 11th Avenue. “We’re excited to get the growing season started,” said garden coordinator Sarah Smith. “We have a lot of new volunteers this year, and we’re hoping for a bountiful harvest.” The garden is open to all Blawnox residents. Helpers gathered on Saturday, April 29th, to plant a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The garden is a collaborative effort between the Blawnox Volunteer Fire Department and the Blawnox Community Development Corporation. It is designed to provide fresh, healthy produce to the community while also fostering a sense of community. “We’re so excited to get the garden started,” said Sarah Jones, a volunteer with the Blawnox Volunteer Fire Department. “This is a great way to bring people together and provide our community with access to fresh, affordable produce.” The garden is located at the corner of North Church Street and 1st Street in Blawnox. It is open to all residents of Blawnox. Helpers are always welcome and no experience is necessary. The garden is planted with a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. This year’s crop includes tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, basil, oregano, thyme, and sunflowers. Helpers hope to see a bountiful harvest this year.
