Houston Police Department (HPD) has charged Jacoby Pendleton, 23, with murder in connection with a fatal collision that occurred at the end of a police chase on Monday, January 9, 2023. According to HPD Lieutenant John Cannon, a police officer attempted to stop Pendleton’s vehicle for a traffic violation. However, Pendleton failed to yield and led the officer on a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended when Pendleton’s vehicle collided with a car driven by Sharon Griffin, 58, at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Dowling Street. Griffin was pronounced deceased at the scene. Pendleton was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was subsequently charged with murder and evading arrest. “This is a tragic loss of life that could have been avoided,” said HPD Chief Troy Finner. “We are committed to holding accountable those who put the lives of our citizens at risk.” Investigators believe that Pendleton was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Blood test results are pending. HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Authorities continue their search for a driver accused of fatally striking a 68-year-old woman during a police pursuit in southeast Houston. According to court documents, the victim has been identified as Sharon Griffin. Her daughter told ABC13 that she was close to her mother, and they resided together. Houston police have charged Jacolby Pendleton, 30, with murder in connection with Thursday night’s fatal crash. Pendleton is also one of seven suspects recently apprehended in connection with shootings in southeast Houston.

Events Leading to the Incident

The incident began when officers observed a known crime suspect with outstanding warrants for aggravated assault, organized crime involvement, and controlled substance possession. At approximately 8:20 p.m., officers attempted to execute a traffic stop, but the suspect refused to comply and initiated a chase near the I-610 South Loop interchange with SH-288. During the chase, the suspect allegedly ignored stop signs and red lights, even driving on the wrong side of the road.

Tragic Accident

Griffin’s daughter expressed concern to ABC13 about the police pursuit’s continuation into a residential area. The chase culminated when the suspect crashed into a dumpster near Rebecca Street and Tierwester and fled on foot. Officers subsequently discovered that Griffin had been struck by the suspect’s vehicle during the incident. Efforts to revive Griffin with CPR and emergency medical assistance proved futile, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
