Closing Laps:
With five laps remaining, Verstappen’s lead was under threat from Leclerc. The Ferrari driver closed the gap to within 0.5 seconds and was looking for an opportunity to overtake. However, Verstappen held his ground and defended brilliantly against Leclerc’s attacks. He eventually crossed the finish line 0.687 seconds ahead of Leclerc to secure his fifth win of the season.

George Russell and Max Verstappen have secured an identical qualifying time for the Canadian Grand Prix. However, as Russell set his time earlier in the session, he will start from pole position. Lando Norris of McLaren will join the top three on the grid, followed by his teammate Oscar Piastri. Russell’s pole is Mercedes’ first of the season, indicating progress in addressing the car’s weaknesses. Ferrari, on the other hand, has endured a disappointing qualifying session. Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz failed to set competitive times in Q2, leaving them outside the top ten starting positions. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin will start sixth, while Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes will be seventh. Lewis Hamilton took home the victory, securing his first win of the 2024 season and extending his record of Canadian Grand Prix victories to eight. The Mercedes driver started the race in pole position and controlled the race from start to finish, leading every lap. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing finished second, followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in third. Verstappen had a strong start but lost positions during the first pit stop. He fought back to close the gap on Hamilton but ultimately fell short. Leclerc also had a solid race, battling with Sergio Perez of Red Bull for much of the afternoon. The race was not without its drama. Carlos Sainz Jr. of Ferrari retired early due to a mechanical issue, while Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin suffered a puncture. There were also several safety car periods, including one caused by Nicholas Latifi’s crash on lap 20. Despite the interruptions, the race provided plenty of entertainment for the fans. Lando Norris of McLaren drove an impressive race to finish in sixth, while hometown hero Lance Stroll of Aston Martin secured a well-deserved eighth place. The victory extends Hamilton’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship standings to 25 points over Verstappen. Mercedes also leads the Constructors’ Championship with a 10-point advantage over Red Bull. The next race on the Formula 1 calendar is the British Grand Prix, which takes place at Silverstone on July 6th.
