This bold move marks a significant milestone in the city’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. The new fleet consists of 50 modern electric buses, each equipped with advanced battery technology and regenerative braking systems. These buses are not only zero-emission, but also offer a quieter and more comfortable riding experience for passengers. “This investment in electric buses is a testament to Baltimore’s dedication to environmental stewardship,” said Mayor Brandon Scott. “By transitioning to electric vehicles, we are reducing our emissions, improving air quality, and creating a more sustainable future for our city.” The transition to electric buses is supported by a $25 million grant from the Maryland Department of Transportation. The buses are being manufactured by Proterra, a leading manufacturer of electric buses, and are scheduled to be delivered in phases over the next two years. “We are proud to partner with Baltimore on this transformative project,” said Jack Allen, President and CEO of Proterra. “Our electric buses are designed to provide reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions for communities.” The new electric buses will operate on several key routes throughout Baltimore, connecting residents and visitors to major destinations such as the Inner Harbor, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The deployment of the electric bus fleet is part of Baltimore’s larger sustainability plan, which includes goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. The city has also committed to converting its entire municipal fleet to electric vehicles by 2030. “Baltimore is setting an example for other cities to follow,” said Josh Tulkin, Executive Director of the Baltimore Energy Commission. “By embracing electric buses, we are demonstrating that it is possible to transition to a zero-emission transportation system while also improving the quality of life for our residents.” The introduction of electric buses in Baltimore is a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for the city.
