Home Invader of Bun B Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison

Bernard L. Butler, known as “Home+Invader,” has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to invading the home of rapper Bun B in 2019. Butler broke into Bun B’s home in Port Arthur, Texas, on March 2, 2019, while the rapper and his family were sleeping. He held two of Bun B’s cousins hostage at gunpoint and demanded money. Bun B, who was alerted to the intrusion, confronted Butler and disarmed him. Butler was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, and felony possession of a weapon. He initially pleaded not guilty, but later changed his plea to guilty in exchange for the reduced sentence. During the sentencing hearing, Judge Kathleen Hamilton described Butler’s crime as “unspeakable.” She cited the terror he inflicted on Bun B’s family and the trauma they continue to endure. Bun B, whose real name is Bernard Freeman, expressed relief after the sentencing. In a statement, he said, “This has been a long and difficult chapter in our lives, but we are grateful for the justice that has been served today.” Butler’s attorney, Brad Crump, said his client is remorseful for his actions. He argued that Butler was struggling with addiction and mental health issues at the time of the crime. Assistant District Attorney Leslie Gardner argued that Butler’s actions were premeditated and violent. She said he had no regard for the safety of the victims and deserved the maximum sentence. The 40-year sentence is the maximum punishment for aggravated robbery in Texas. Butler will be eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence.Bun heard his wife yelling at Jackson to take the car and then grabbed his own gun and went downstairs.
