GREENOCK Crematorium staff have been praised by a senior inspector for delivering a high level of service.

A report published following an inspection earlier this month found that there are high standards in records management, processes, policies and leadership, which have resulted in ‘a first-class service to the local community and beyond’.

In 2023, 823 cremations took place and crematorium staff were praised for their high standards across the board, from office management to the handling of ashes.

The inspectorate also commended the team for continuing to operate and maintain service levels during recent upgrades, which have improved working conditions and equipment.

In recent months, work has been done to replace the cremators, convert an abandoned monumental building into new facilities for staff and upgrade the music and live streaming systems.

The inspector also praised the condition of the public and private areas, which were found to be ‘clean, tidy and in good repair’, and noted that the grounds and garden were ‘well maintained’.

In his report, Robert Swanson, Senior Inspector of Funeral, Cremation and Funeral Directors (Scotland), said: “Greenock Crematorium continues to provide a high level of service and, as was the case during previous inspections, no shortcomings were noted in any area of the cremation process, with good practice noted at various stages.

“The crematorium continues to operate as a national training center for staff, and it is a great credit to the staff that all attendees have spoken highly of the training on return to their home crematoria.

“There have been recent staff changes within the office, but being under the direct management and support of a highly regarded and experienced team leader, the inspector does not expect a drop in the high standards that the crematorium continues to provide.

“Overall, the inspection found that Greenock Crematorium provides a first class service to the local community and beyond.”

Also highlighted was the crematorium’s participation in the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) metals recycling programme, which raised £12,000 for a local charity.

Stuart Jamieson, Inverclyde Council’s director of environment and regeneration, said: “We have a small but incredibly experienced and hardworking team running the crematorium, as highlighted in the report, and it is thanks to their dedication and knowledge that the service has received so much praise.

“Their work requires tact and compassion, and they are consummate professionals who deserve all the praise they receive. I would like to express my gratitude for all their hard work.

“I would also like to thank the public for their patience and understanding during the various improvement works in and around the crematorium.”
