Columbus Dispatch: Fire Rages Through Historic Building in DowntownColumbus Dispatch: Fire Rages Through Historic Building in Downtown Columbus, Ohio – A devastating fire tore through a historic building in the heart of downtown Columbus early this morning, causing extensive damage and forcing nearby businesses to close. The fire broke out at around 2:00 AM at the Orton Hall Building, which is located on East State Street near High Street. Firefighters responded within minutes, but the flames quickly spread through the wood-frame structure, destroying the roof and causing portions of the walls to collapse. The building, which was constructed in 1888, housed the Columbus College of Art & Design’s (CCAD) Photography, Film, and Animation department. According to CCAD President Melanie Corn, all students and staff were safely evacuated and there were no injuries. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of this iconic building,” Corn said. “It was not only a historic landmark but also a hub of creativity for our students.” The fire also forced the closure of several businesses in the area, including a coffee shop, a restaurant, and an art gallery. The nearby Columbus Metropolitan Library was closed as a precaution due to smoke and water damage. Firefighters worked throughout the night to bring the blaze under control, but the building was declared a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Orton Hall Building was a designated Columbus City Landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was originally constructed as a retail and office building and over the years served various purposes, including housing the Columbus Public Library. “This is a tragedy for our city,” said Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther. “The Orton Hall Building was a symbol of our past and a vibrant part of our present. We will work to ensure that its legacy is preserved.” The city plans to work with CCAD and other stakeholders to determine how to rebuild or restore the historic structure. In the meantime, CCAD is looking for temporary space for its Photography, Film, and Animation department. The fire has shocked the Columbus community and has drawn sympathy from across the country. CCAD has set up a fund to support the department and its students during this difficult time.
