The Green Space Initiative aims to: * Create 100 new acres of parkland within the next five years. This includes acquiring unused land, partnering with non-profit organizations, and converting existing impervious surfaces to green space. * Increase tree canopy cover by 50% by 2050. The initiative will plant over 150,000 trees throughout the city, focusing on underserved neighborhoods and areas with high heat vulnerability. * Establish a Green Infrastructure Network. This network will connect parks, trails, and greenways, creating a seamless network of natural spaces that can support wildlife, improve air quality, and mitigate flooding. The Mayor’s plan has garnered widespread support from community organizations, environmental advocates, and city council members. The Sustainable Lexington Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to environmental sustainability, praised the initiative as a “game-changer” for the city. “This initiative will not only beautify our city but also improve the health and well-being of our residents,” said Alliance President Emily Simms. To fund the initiative, the Mayor proposes a combination of public and private funds. She has requested $5 million in the city’s 2023 budget for park acquisition and tree planting, and will work with the private sector to secure matching funds. “We have a unique opportunity to transform Lexington into a model of environmental stewardship,” said Mayor Gorton. “This Green Space Initiative will create a legacy for our city that we can be proud of for generations to come.” The initiative will be implemented over the next several years, with the first phase focusing on acquiring land and planting trees in high-need areas. The city will also work closely with residents and community organizations to ensure the green spaces are accessible, inclusive, and meet the needs of the Lexington community.
